Our next meeting is Monday, Mov 14th, 2011, at 10:00 am, at Cherry Hills Library.

(6901 Barstow NE)

Speaker: Ingrid Nelson

Ingrid will be returning to answer even more of the questions we have about the complex issues of Powers of Attorney for Medical care, guardianship, advance directives, conservatorship, and Universal Health Care Act. As you may remember from our meeting earlier this year, there are nuances to all of these issues.

Again, bring your questions. Ingrid is a great speaker, and I hope that we have a good turnout.

About Us

We are a volunteer organization founded to support family living providers under the DD Waiver, with education, newsletters, seminars and advocacy. We are made up of parents, guardians and surrogate caregivers.

When things go bad, we may be able to help!

Throughout history, government institutions have tried and generally failed to provide quality care for those with developmental disabilities. Finally, after years of reported instances of abuse, neglect and incompetence (and of course, lawsuits) there is a realization that the best care available is from the natural family or a caring individual in the home. However, few have the resources to provide the 365/7/24 care that is necessary.

Today, New Mexico is one of the leading states in providing assistance through a program called the Developmental Disabilities Waiver. (DD Waiver)

But, like any program administered by the government, it is not perfect, and that is where we come in. We deal with the alphabet soup of state agencies that have influence or control over regulations, funding and policies. Many have their own agendas including insuring health and safety, budget cutting, or (seemingly) to just create more rules and regulations.

We meet every other month at 10:00 am on the second Monday at the Cherry Creek Library at 6901 Barstow NE (MAP) in Albuquerque, NM. Meetings usually last 1–2 hours and everyone is invited to attend. When you enter the front doors of the library, make a left turn and you'll see us through the glass door.

DD Waiver

The Developmental Disabilities Waiver is a state run program to provide care for people with developmental disabilities in community programs.
